Random Rants: The Bradbury

The Bradbury Building

If you visited L.A. you've probably walked right passed it.  Nestled between a Subway restaurant and Sprint Mobile store is one of the most interesting buildings in America. It's the place where OJ bought the murder weapon, and  the place where androids come to die, its called the Bradbury Building.

The Bradbury is an architectural marvel, it's a national historic landmark built in 1893. It's interior is stunning, the central courtyard courtyard is covered by a five story high peaked glass roof, which “Arts and Architecture Magazine” called “a fairytale of mathematics”.  The roof bathes the entire interior of the building in a soft natural light.

The walls are made of a glazed brick, the floors are covered in Mexican tile, and the stairs are carved out of Belgium marble.  But by far, the building’s most gorgeous element is the lavish wrought iron detailing that is located throughout.

It has to be seen to be believed, and the most interesting part is you probably already have.

The Bradbury has been seen in many hollywood films over the years, the most notable being Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.  During the climax of the movie Harrison ford enters the Bradbury in search of the replicant Roy.

Unlike the real thing, the Bradbury in Blade Runner is dark and smoky to match its film-noir theme.

The Bradbury is also seen as a in 500 Days of Summer. It doubled as an arhcitectural office, where Joseph Gordon Levitt interviews for a job and bumps into Mink Kelly.

Michael Douglas looks over the Bradbury courtyard in the movie Disclosure with Demi Moore.

The building can also be seen in television and movies such as:

The Night Strangler, Chinatown (1974), The Cheap Detective (1978), Avenging Angel (1985), Murphy's Law (1986), The Dreamer of Oz (1990 TV movie), 1994’s Wolf and Disclosure, Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), Pay It Forward (2000), and The Artist (2011).

The ground floor of the building is home to Ross Cutlery - the knife store where O.J. Simpson allegedly purchased a 12-inch stilleto knife three weeks before the murders of Ronald Goldman and Nicole Simpson.

If your in downtown L.A. this landmark shouldn't be missed, read its rich history (here), it's truly one of the worlds most interesting buildings.
